Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Kitale, Kenya, to teach photography lessons to an orphanage. A special thanks to Henry’s Newmarket for their donation and as well to Horizon Initiative for giving me to opportunity to travel there and teach. It was an amazing experience and a very successful trip to say the least. There were children in the class from grades 5 to grade 12, then all the staff members joined in on the lessons as well. I was happy to create an end of term Exam, which everybody passed with atleast 80%. The photos that some of the kids captured blew my mind away. I was so impressed with the way that they understood the concept of using a camera without ever even touching one or seeing one before. Some of the kids really surprised me with the way they not only understood the concepts but were able to take some really beautiful and unique images. I remember trying to explain the word creativity to them, and how hard it was to describe it without trying to show it to them myself. However, they grasped the concept quite quickly and definitely made those cameras there bitches. haha. I plan to go back again soon, and hope to focus on a series to capture while I’m there. Unfortunately my schedule was so packed that I was unable to shoot alot, but my next trip I will plan for lots of shooting time.
Anyway, here are some images to enjoy. The full set is on my facebook fan page, and will soon be posted on my website (which is temporarily down).
